Week 8 in UpF

This weeks lecture is with Björn Tunbäck, board member of “Reportrar utan gränser” and journalist for SVT who also has been working for Kaliber and Uppdrag granskning. Furthermore, he has been deeply engaged with the Dawit Isaak-case.

This lecture will focus on threats against freedom of speech. Björn Tunbäck, an active journalist working for both “Reporters without borders” and SVT is going to talk about his own experiences concerning different types and causes of threats against journalists and activists. His analysis specifically covers the situation in Kenya, Uganda and Eritrea. This naturally follows as he has just returned from a trip to several East African countries. A well-known example from the area is the case of Dawit Isaak, the Swedish-Eritrean journalist who has been imprisoned by the government of Eritrea due to his journalistic work. The lecturer will also discuss the response from the Swedish media and authorities as well as the EU concerning these problems.

UpF is going to Morocco!

For those of you who have missed the  meeting last Thursday, here is some summed up information about the trip.

In the third week of April, UpF is organising a study trip to Morocco, more specifically between the 18th and 25th. The aim of travelling there is to reach a combination of visiting several organisations and exploring the country from a touristic point of view.

From a foreign affairs perspective, Morocco is an interesting place to visit, mainly because of the political isolation from Africa and the African Union. The West Sahara conflict has been a politically sensitive discussion since the occupation from Morocco in 1975. 84 countries, for example all African countries besides Morocco, have accepted West Sahara as an independent country, but none of the EU countries does. Further topics to explore while visiting are the Human rights situation in the country, the relation with other African countries, the democratic development, child labor and emigration to Europe, effects of the Arab Spring etc. We will mostly spend our time in the capital Rabat at the seaside, the political centre of the country where also all the important organisations are situated. However, the historical city of Casablanca is only one hour away by train and thus offers a perfect opportunity for a day trip.

Hard facts:
When: April 18th-25th (maybe 24th depending on the flights)
Costs: 4500-5500 SEK including flights, transportation, accommodation, organisation visits
Maximum amount of travelers: 20 UpF members (lottery system)
Location: Mostly the capital Rabat
Accommodation: Surfers Hostel
Flight: Stockholm – Rabat
Application: Write a mail to travel@upfu.org with your name and phone number
(This application is not binding and it is possible to opt-out at any time.)
Confirmed organisations: UNHCR, Swedish Embassy, AMDH.
In process: University of Rabat, organisation for women’s rights (ADFM) etc.

Week 6 in UpF

Another exciting week is coming including a lecture and to information meetings.
On Monday at 15.00 in Lecture hall B (Lindell) Max Koch, professor from Lund University is visiting us to give a lecture about “CLIMATE CHANGE, CAPITALISM and DEGROWTH Trajectories To A Steady-State Economy”

degrowthposter_print_page_001_1_2
Abstract:
This lecture summarizes the available climate science expertise and then discusses the genesis of climate change as a socio-ecological issue highlighting its parallel development with capitalism. It moves on to review institutional approaches to study the link between capitalist diversity and greenhouse gas emissions and outlines future research directions with emphasis on a possible reconciliation of Marxian and “degrowth” thought. Due to the lacking evidence for absolute decoupling of economic growth, material resource use and carbon emissions it is argued that rich societies will need to deprioritize economic growth as policy goal in the twenty-first century. Critical thought should be dedicated towards analyzing the structural challenges and opportunities in building a global steady-state economy as well as associated postgrowth societies.
